My teammate and I propose a video explaining the difference between atoms and molecules through an analogy to the bonding between legos. We will explain the concept using the following analogy:
* we start by introducing a house and noticing that it's made up of a bunch of pieces we call "legos"
* how is this similar to atoms and molecules?
* it's exactly the same: just as the house is made up of many kinds of different legos, molecules are made up of different kinds of atoms
* so what else can we learn about atoms and molecules from legos?
* each element (type of atom) has characteristic properties that make it unique, just like each lego of a certain color and number of connectors is unique
* each element is defined by the number of each of its constituent parts; that is, oxygen is oxygen because
* though there are different types of atoms, each is made of the same set of components, just like legos
* atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons; legos are made of rectangular base and circular connectors
* an atom has a non-interacting core and an outer electron shell with which it makes bonds, like legos
* atoms make bonds via their valence electrons; legos make bonds via their circular connectors
* bonding between atoms atoms can be of different strength; so can the bonds between legos
* single bond=legos bonded only by 1 row of connectors
* double bond=legos bonded by 2 rows of connectors
* when atoms bond, they form molecules with properties different from the individual atoms; when legos bond, they form different structures with properties different from the individual parts
* and that's the difference! atoms are the building blocks of molecules, just as legos are the building blocks of lego houses, people
* finish with how atoms and molecules are similar in that they are both building blocks
* atoms are the building blocks for molecules, and molecules are the building blocks for e.g. proteins, cells, etc.
* legos build lego houses, which build lego-land!
